Weekly PWA Family Email
Week 2
August 31, 2018

The second week of school has been a fun one, as students have been busy getting to know one another and adapting to the routines of their classrooms. Smiling faces abound, and it’s such a joy to see the kids settling in, working hard, and having fun.

The weather will remain hot and sticky next week, but we still try to get outside whenever possible. Please be sure to pack a water bottle for your student (labeled with his or her name).

PE classes will start next week, along with Music.

Have you signed up for our text message alert system? If not, please do! We use our text message alerts to send important information, such as weather-related changes to the school day, or reminders of special events. This is by far the most effective way to reach parents quickly, so we strongly urge you sign up.

To opt in, text PWA to 33222.
With our middle school growing, we’d like to create a new lunch lounge for our upper grade students. Our 5th-8th grade students will have lunch there, and use the space for special projects, break-out sessions, or downtime with their teachers.

With that in mind, we are looking for a couple of cozy couches or settees to set up in there. If you have one in great shape to donate, please let us know!

We’ve received lots of interest in the Parent Teacher Council, and we’re ready to get this show on the road! We’d like to have our first meeting on September 20th at 5:30 pm in the school cafeteria. We hope you’ll join us! We’ll work on fundraising ideas and special events for the students, and discuss ways we can support our teachers.

If you have any questions about the PTC, please contact Dr. Nykwest at rnykwest@princewilliamacademy.com,
We are working on our school theme for the year, would like for it to emphasize kindness. Students and their teachers are busy working on a motto. We encourage you to help your children think about the importance of kindness and additional ways to incorporate the conscious practice of it into our daily routines at school. And if you have a good idea for a motto, please share it with your child or teacher. Classes will submit mottos and the students will all have an opportunity to vote on them.
Thanks to those of you who stopped by to meet Dr. Harris for this morning’s coffee! She enjoyed chatting with you.
We wish all our family a very happy Labor Day and long weekend. We’ll see you at school on Tuesday!
School pictures will be taken on October 29th. More information to follow, but in the meantime, mark your calendars!

A few useful reminders about lunches and snacks:
* Please remember that we are a nut-free school. No nuts of any kind are permitted in lunches or snacks.
* Please remember to make healthy choices for lunch and snacks.
* If you plan to buy lunch for your child, please do so in advance. Lunch packets are attached to this email, or are available at the front desk.
* Please be sure to pack plenty of snacks for your child, especially if they attend before and/or aftercare.
* If your child has food allergies, our school chef Ms. Veronica is happy to work with your family to make sure your child has options. Please see the front desk if you’d like to communicate directly with her regarding the menu.

Our elementary and middle students have jumped right into learning this week! Homework packets have gone home, and should be turned in next Friday.

We celebrated Mrs. Wiggin’s birthday on Friday. Happy birthday, Mrs. Wiggins!

We’d like to gently remind parents that students must be in their classrooms and parents must exit the elementary/middle wing by 8:10 am. Class starts promptly at 8:15. If you drop your child off later than this, please bring them to the front office and allow a staff member to take them back to class, so that the teachers are not interrupted. We thank you in advance for your cooperation.

Our 3s preschoolers enjoyed magnet activities this week, with new magnet blocks. They did “All About Me” projects, and found the first signs of fall with a leaf search.

Our Jr K students worked on the letters Aa – Ee and began their handwriting and math workbooks. Their theme this week was hygiene and safety.

We welcomed several new friends to the center this week! The weather has been too hot for prolonged time outdoors, but the teachers have taken every advantage of milder days by spending time on the playground.
