Week 11

We had an action-packed week at school, with a field trip for the upper grades, school picture day, and, of course, Halloween. We enjoyed seeing all the costumes, and the little kids’ parade through the school.

It’s hard to believe, but today marked the end of our first grading period of the school year! Report cards will be available by Thursday, November 7th. Please email rnykwest@princewilliamacademy.com (mailto:rnykwest@princewilliamacademy.com?subject=Chalkable%20Login) if you do not yet have a chalkable login or password.

Next week, we will be closed for regular school and childcare on Monday for Parent/Teacher conferences. If you haven’t signed up with your child’s teacher yet but would like to, please feel free to reach out to her or him via email to schedule a time. Childcare will be available that day.

Unlike the county public schools,
we will be OPEN for regular school and preschool on November 5th–and we will have childcare available for public school siblings and extended care students for those who need it. Please contact the office on Monday if you’d like to sign up.

Please see below for special news about our Yankee Candle Fundraiser. If you order tonight or this weekend, you’ll receive free shipping! You’ll also find information on the PTC’s next spirit night at Chuck E Cheese.

We hope you all enjoy the long weekend!

November 4th is parent/teacher conference day. We will be closed for school, but open for child care, and parents are invited to come in and speak one-on-one with their child’s teacher. If you haven’t already signed up with your child’s teacher but would like to, please send them an email!

Picture retakes and makeups will be held on Tuesday, November 19th (this is a change from the original date).

Sugar Part 1 – Know Your Sugar

Naturally occurring sugars are defined as all sugars that occur naturally in a variety of foods or drinks. Examples are fruits, grains, and milk.

Added sugars are defined as all sugars and syrups that are added to foods during processing. Examples are soft drinks, juices, candy, chocolate, cakes, cookies and other baked items, along with sweetened breakfast cereals.

While both naturally occurring and added sugars have the same amount of calories and when consumed in large amounts can lead to weight gain and health problems, naturally occurring sugars at least have nutritional value such as vitamins and minerals and contribute to a well balanced diet when taken in moderation.

The World Health Organizations’ suggested amount of added sugar intake is:

Ages 4-8: 8 teaspoons daily

Ages 9-13 : 10.5 teaspoons daily

Ages 14-18 : 13 teaspoons daily

4 grams of sugar equate to 1 teaspoon

Let’s look at a typical scenario:

1 – 4oz juice box can have up to 14 grams of sugar, which translates to 3.5 teaspoons of sugar.

Add that to a snack-sized Teddy Grams (7g of sugar) and you’re already at more than half the recommenced level of added sugar intake.

So what to do about too much sugar?

The first thing is to grasp what your child’s current added sugar intake really looks like. Calculate all the grams of sugars they eat from their snacks, yogurts, boxed breakfast, and juices and assess if your child needs to cut back based on the recommended intake amounts.

If you find that they do need to cut back, try to incorporate more veggies and fruits into your child’s diet.

Substitute juice with water or milk.

Instead of having them eat a snack with added sugars like Teddy Grams or Oreos, have them eat popcorn, rice cakes or pretzels. These rarely have any added sugars.

Also, keep in mind that ingredients are always labeled with the most content in order, so if SUGAR (any type) is mentioned in the first 3 ingredients, try to steer clear because most likely it has many grams of sugar.

Thank you for tuning in! Next week will be Sugar Part 2 – Carbohydrates

The November menu is here (https://gallery.mailchimp.com/5cce73ca32dfe2648ffe00182/files/6b0e9cb4-b311-411c-a015-ece9f7f76507/OCTOBER_2019_MENU.docx) , and can also be found in the buttons at the end of this email, along with school lunch packet forms.

Parents are encouraged to purchase lunch packets rather than single lunches–the price per lunch drops when you buy more at a time. If you want to purchase daily lunch for your child, the total cost is $80 per month.
