Week 40
May 24th, 2019
With just 3 weeks of the regular school year left, PWA is humming with activity. This week in the elementary and middle school, we punctuated end-of-year assessments with releasing butterflies the students raised, a field trip for 3rd and 4th grade, picking strawberries from our garden, and lots of walks and breaks in the fresh air. Our preschoolers also enjoyed outdoor time, and releasing their butterflies, as well as a walk to Fantasy Park for the 3s.
Our students ages 3 and up gave us delightful end-of-year and world language performances today, and, as always, we are so grateful to our teachers for putting these programs together. We’d like to thank Ms. Li, Ms. Nuria, and Ms. Huda for sharing their native languages with our students. Thanks also to our music teacher extraordinaire, Ns. Noh, for all she does to put our school programs together.
We have lots of other big things coming up over the next few weeks, including a spirit night at Chipotle on the May 28th; graduation ceremonies for our Kindergartners and 8th graders; our 3-8th grade music and drama program; a field trip for our 8th grade to King’s Dominion; a special outing for our 5th graders (who are about to become middle schoolers!); our Father’s Day coffee; Field Day, and more. Even though we’re winding down, school is still in session until the very last day! Unless otherwise noted, students must wear their uniforms daily (and there is no more PE for the year, as Ms. Loreto will be away until summer–so no dress down days other than Fridays!). Students will continue academic work until the end of the school year in their classes.
We hope you all enjoy quality time together, and a well-earned break this weekend!
PWA will be closed for school and childcare on Monday, May 27th, in observance of Memorial Day, as we remember and honor all those who have served this country.
Thanks to all of you who joined us for our end-of-year and World Language performances this afternoon! The kids did a fantastic job, and we’re so grateful to our teachers for all their hard work! See photos below.
Safety is our top concern at PWA, and we’re always looking for ways to enhance it! We’ve put in a lovely new walkway along the far side of the parking lot, leading to the main sidewalk. Now students and parents can utilize this walkway instead of walking through the parking lot to get to the front entrance!
Join the PWA PTC for the last spirit night of the school year! We’re headed back to the beginning with another Chipotle Fundraiser. Just stop by the Chipotle in Merchant Plaza on Tuesday, May 28th between 5 and 9 pm, and show the flyer below. PWA will receive 33% of the proceeds from your meal! This is our final push for the technology fundriaser, so we hope to see you there!
Our 3rd – 8th grade Drama and Musical presentation will take place on Thursday, June 6th (please note, the date is being changed from the 7th!) at 5:00 pm. Our students will perform on bucket drums and recorders, and will do a few bits from Shakespeare!
Enrollment is in full swing for PWA’s Summer Enrichment Program! All campers work on core academic subjects in the mornings, from 9 to 12, to reinforce learning from the previous school year and give them a jump-start on the school year ahead. Afternoons are full of fun and exciting events and activities. Campers go swimming each week, take field trips to area sites and attractions, visit Fantasy Park, and enjoy a wide variety of in-house shows and events. We’re also offering two special weeks of Art Camp this summer, with our own Ms. Cox!

Our Scholastic Book Fair is coming! This year’s Book Fair runs from June 3rd – June 14th, and provides a great opportunity to stock up on summer reading, birthday gifts, and more. We’ll have more info posted around the school shortly.
This year’s Book Fair will also feature a very special book signing event by our own resident author, kindergartner Devyn Goddard! Copies of her delightful book, If My Family Lived in the Ocean, will be available during the Book Fair, and may also be purchased

Our lost and found bin is at max capacity! Please check it for items that might belong to your child. We’ve separated items into preschool and elem/middle. We also have a pair of nice glasses at the front desk that were found in the parking lot.
Anything not claimed by June 3rd will be donated to a thrift shop!

Spotted at school this week….
3rd and 4th grades took a field trip to Rippon Lodge, the oldest house in Prince William County. They toured the house and learned about life in Virginia in the 18th century–including a lesson on how people did laundry! They also learned a few games played by 18th century children.
