Week 13
We only had 4 days of school this week, but we sure packed a lot in!
Our K and 1st graders went on a field trip to Hylton High School this week, to visit the planetarium there. Did you know Hylton has a planetarium?? The kids learned about the stars and had a wonderful time.
Picture proofs arrived yesterday. If you’d like for your child to have retakes done–or if they missed photos the first time around–please let the office know by Monday. Retakes are scheduled for Tuesday, November 19th. And please note that Creative Images will spot fix any issues on your current pictures, like glare on glasses, or a stain on a shirt.
Our Thanksgiving Luncheon will take place on November 21st, and will have two seatings and musical performances. Please see below for more details. Admission is $10 for adults, and regular lunch fees for students. We hope to see you there!
Our second and third graders will take a trip on Monday to the National Museum of the American Indian, and will enjoy some time on the mall.
Have a wonderful weekend, PWA families! Enjoy those fall colors while they last!
Just a reminder that traffic moves ONE WAY through our parking lot at all times. When you enter the lot, you may turn right ONLY. Traffic moves counterclockwise through the lot at all times.
Please do not speed in the parking lot, even when you don’t see children around, and take care when entering parking spaces.
Your observance of these rules helps ensure everyone’s safety!
If you haven’t yet, now is a good time to sign up for PWA’s Text Message Alert system. We use this system for important announcements regarding weather or other need-to-know information. It is not used for advertising or promotions.
To opt in, please text PWAED to 33222.
Picture retakes and makeups will be held on Tuesday, November 19th. If you’d like retakes done, please notify the office by Monday the 18th so we can have a list ready!
Please consider doing some holiday shopping at our online Yankee Candle Store. Just visit https://www.yankeecandlefundraising.com/store.htm and enter our group id number, 999987485. PWA will receive 40% of your order, which goes towards the PTC’s Technology Enhancement Initiative. Thank you for your support!
We hope you’ll join us for our annual Thanksgiving Luncheon on Thursday, November 21st. Tickets are $10.00 per parent (regular lunch prices for students) and will include a delicious lunch prepared by Chef Veronica, as well as a musical performance by our Jr K, elementary and middle school students. We’ll have two seatings for Jr K and up; preschool luncheon will be served in classrooms. Jr K and K will have the performance at 11, and lunch from 11:15 – 12:00. 1st – 8th grades will have their performance at 12:15, and lunch from 12:30 – 1:15. Preschool luncheons will be held in classrooms at 11:45.
We hope to see you there!

Sugar Part 3 – Negative Effects of Sugar
This rounds out our 3-part discussion on sugar.
We first covered knowing your sugars and explained the difference between natural and added sugars. Then we dived into carbohydrates and explained simple vs complex carbs and how they are related to sugar. The last part of our sugar discussion is the negative effects sugar has on the body.
Eating sugary foods can make you feel full for a while, but your body is missing out on lots of good stuff like proteins, vitamins, and minerals which it could be getting from healthier food choices.
Here are some examples of the negative effects of sugar:
Tooth decay – caused by the acid made by bacteria that grows in sugar. It eats away at tooth enamel.
Obesity – sugar creates craving tendencies which result in more sugar intake, which can lead to weight gain.
Diabetes – too much sugar intake can make it harder for the body to produce insulin, which can lead to type 2 diabetes.
Cardiovascular Disease – regular intake of sugar can create chronic inflammation in the body and can be a pathway to heart disease.
Nutrition – when our diets are not balanced and we find ourselves eating more processed foods, we in turn end up eating empty calories that are nutrient deficient.
Behavior – Sugar can cause hyperactivity and has been linked to depression, cognitive delay, and sleep problems.
One simple step to help our children avoid this problems is to create more consciousness around their daily intake of sugar. Try to get a pulse on how much they are taking in from added and natural sugars and carbs. This will help you know if you are right on track in balancing their nutrition, or if you need to tweak some things like reducing a snack or two or substituting one for vegetables instead.
