Week 9
PWA in the evening, after all the children have gone home.
The days are getting shorter, and by the time the last of us leave for the day, it’s getting dark! But we still have some blooms around the school, which look lovely alongside the changing leaves.
Our fall festival is coming up at the end of next week, and it’s always fun for everyone. Many of our events will be held outdoors if the weather permits, but the bouncy house and several of our games will take place in the gym. See below for details. Parent volunteers are always welcome, and there’s a sign-up sheet at the front desk.
Our Principal’s Scholar Awards for Compassion will take place next week as well, and school pictures will be taken the following week, on the 30th. We have some field trips coming up in our elementary and middle school this month and next, so please keep an eye out for details from your child’s teacher! Lots of exciting things happening around the school.
Our Yankee Candle Fundraiser continues, and we’ve raised over $500 so far! Amazing. Please help us keep it going. Catalog sales continue through November 8th, or you can order online by following the link below. Please help us make this fundraiser a big success!
Have a wonderful weekend, PWA families!
Below you’ll find a link to the school calendar for the 2019-2020 school year. This calendar is subject to change on occasion as we add dates in for events. So be sure to check it regularly!

Our annual Fall Festival takes place on Friday, October 25th, from 9-2 at the school. Preschoolers will have activities in the morning, and our elementary and middle students will participate in activities after lunch. We have a signup sheet at the front desk, and welcome parent volunteers to help run stations. Parents are also welcome to join their children for the festivities! We’ll have a bounce house, games, relay races, arts and crafts, popcorn, and lots more!
School photo day is coming! School pictures will be taken on Wednesday, October 30th.* Students should wear their school uniforms.
*
Tuesday/Thursday students may come for pictures; ask your child’s teacher what time they should be here. Or they can have their pictures taken on Make-up picture day, which will be Tuesday, November 19th.
Are your child’s immunizations up-to-date? Please remember to bring us an updated copy of your child’s vaccination record every time they receive a new shot or booster. Children under two must have an updated vaccination record once every 6 months. After age 2, we require proof of updated vaccinations once between the ages of 4 and 6, and each time they receive a new vaccination or booster.
Please let us know if you have any questions!
Our PTC Yankee Candle Fundraiser is in full swing! You will have received order forms in your child’s backpack that you can use to place your own orders, or get orders from friends and family members in support of our school. Those forms should be returned to your child’s teacher or the front office by November 8th. Please make checks payable to “Prince William Academy.” Items will be shipped to the school for distribution before the holidays.
You can also place your order through our school’s store on the Yankee Candle website here:
https://www.yankeecandlefundraising.com/store.htm. Online orders are payable to Yankee Candle, and are shipped directly to you.
Thank you for your support! All proceeds go towards enhancing technology at PWA.
French Club is back! Students from 2nd – 8th grade can join Ruth Dale after school on Wednesdays for songs, vocabulary, and games to help them learn the beautiful language of French. The club runs from October 15th – December 3rd from 4:00 – 4:45 pm each Wednesday. The cost is $99 for 8 lessons.
Please see the flyer below, and let the office know if you’d like to enroll your student!

Pure Beings Corner
As part of our school’s ongoing effort to promote good health and a holistic approach to our students’ well-being, we’ll be working with PWA mom and entrepreneur Samar Omeish and her project, Pure Beings. We’ll regularly feature recipes, advice, nutritional information, and more from Samar here in our newsletter. She’ll also be coming to the school to help the students learn more about nutrition and health!
Organic has become a buzz word, and my goal is to break it down. What is “organic?”
For starters, organic produce comes from farming that avoids the use of man-made fertilizers, pesticides, growth regulators and livestock feed additives in its methods. In addition, organic legislation generally prohibits the use of genetically modified organisms (GMOs) or products produced from GMOs from having the organic label.
As parents, our intention is always in the right place when we want to nourish our kiddos. So in an ideal world, it would be great if everything we buy could be organic. But what to do if you can’t go ALL organic? Just look at my simple tip and I guarantee you, it’s a game changer for your produce shopping experience.
Every year the Environmental Working Group comes out with a Shopper’s Guide to Pesticide in Produce called the Dirty Dozen and the Clean Fifteen. The Dirty Dozen are 12 fruits/vegetables, in order, that are the most laden with pesticides. The Clean Fifteen are 15 fruits/vegetables, also in order, that are the least affected by pesticides.
So what does this mean? It means you can buy the Clean Fifteen as non-organic while focusing on only buying the Dirty Dozen as organic produce. Here is the link to see the complete lists.
Dirty Dozen: https://www.ewg.org/foodnews/dirty-dozen.php
Clean Fifteen: https://www.ewg.org/foodnews/clean-fifteen.php
Hope you find this tip helpful. Happy produce shopping!
The October menu is here (https://gallery.mailchimp.com/5cce73ca32dfe2648ffe00182/files/6b0e9cb4-b311-411c-a015-ece9f7f76507/OCTOBER_2019_MENU.docx) , and can also be found in the buttons at the end of this email, along with school lunch packet forms.
Parents are encouraged to purchase lunch packets rather than single lunches–the price per lunch drops when you buy more at a time. If you want to purchase daily lunch for your child, the total cost is $80 per month.
