Weekly PWA Family Email
Week 3
September 7th, 2018
We managed to stay mostly cool this week, and even got outside here and there (including for a morning fire drill!) before the heat took over. Our PE teacher, Angela Loreto Alvarado Rios (Ms. Loreto) returned this week, and will now teach PE twice per week for all elementary students, on Tuesdays and Thursdays. We don’t have uniforms for PE (though we may soon for older grades), but we do ask that students wear sneakers to school on PE days.
Music starts back up next week, with art and foreign languages to follow soon after. Extracurricular activities will begin mid-September, and you can learn more about what’s offered here at school for ages 2 and above at Back-to-School Night. We hope to see parents from all parts of the school–from the infant and toddler center through the middle school–on September 13th!
Back-to-school night happens next week! Join your child’s teacher on Thursday, September 13th between 5:00 – 7:00 pm in the classroom for information about the curriculum, classroom routines, expectations, and more. Please note that your child’s teacher may ask you to arrive at a specific time for a presentation.
You’ll also have a chance to learn about all our extracurricular activities, as vendors from Soccer Shots, Little People’s Creative Workshop, Tennis, Chess Club, Basketball, Fitness Run, Flag Football, Martial Arts and more will be here to provide information about their fall sessions, which start up in mid-September.
Have you signed up for our text message alert system? If not, please do! We use our text message alerts to send important information, such as weather-related changes to the school day, or reminders of special events. This is by far the most effective way to reach parents quickly, so we strongly urge you sign up.
To opt in, text PWA to 33222.
Would you like to help plan fun events at the school? Create special events for teachers? Search for grants? Organize fundraisers? Be a part of shaping your child’s school environment? If so, the PTC is for you! We’re planning our first meeting for September 20th at 5:30 pm in the school cafeteria. We hope you’ll join us!
If you have any questions about the PTC, please contact Dr. Nykwest at rnykwest@princewilliamacademy.com,
Huge thanks to the Dorgan family, who donated a play kitchen and a whole lot of other wonderful toys today. We spread them throughout the preschool, and they’ve already made lots of kids very happy. Thank you!
Would you like to sign your child up for tutoring after school? PWA’s teachers are here to help! We offer tutoring in one-on-one or small group sessions (no larger than 4 students). Subjects include language arts, reading comprehension, spelling, math (all levels, including pre-algebra, algebra I, and geometry) foreign languages and more. The cost is $25 per subject for a 30-minute session, and multiple subjects are available each afternoon. Please contact the office for more details! Available for students 5 and up.
School pictures will be taken on October 29th. More information to follow, but in the meantime, mark your calendars!
Weekly Class Updates
Our Kindergartners learned about the five senses this week, and did several experiments in class, including one with spices! See pic below.
Congrats to our all-star spellers this week! Our first and second graders all earned 100% (plus bonus words!) on their spelling tests!
Our third graders talked about kindness and discussed how one’s actions affect others, which was the theme of some of their reading this week. Book report packets went home this week and will need to be signed and returned. First book reports are due Sept. 28th!
Our fourth graders took a break from working on place value and prime factorization to enjoy a birthday party for Gautam today, complete with Indian food for all! Thanks so much to the Mathur family for this special treat. Happy birthday, Gautam!
Our middle schoolers have been learning about “suspense,” and writing their own suspenseful stories. They’ll all also have a research project on Geology due on October 2nd, when they’ll give class presentations.
Our middle schoolers also went down to the science lab this week to compare salt and sugar under a microscope, and ended up looking at a wide variety of things.
Our 5th – 8th grade students will have math quizzes on Monday, and science quizzes next Thursday!
In our 2s classes this week, our students continued the theme of “All About Me,” and worked on the letter B by making a special collage.
In our 3s classes this week, our theme was “Safety and Hygiene.” We learned about stop, drop and roll, and made doctor’s kits, firetrucks, and traffic lights.
In Jr K, our theme was “Community.” Next week’s theme will be “All About Me.” Students continued to make progress in their handwriting and math workbooks!
We had more new friends join us this week, and several milestones to celebrate as some of our crawlers have taken their first steps, and some of our toddlers have moved from cribs to cots. This is the kind of thing that gets us all excited!
Ms. Amanda Pischel (re)joined our staff last week as Admissions Director and School Programs Coordinator. Amanda has been a part of the PWA family for many years, starting her career here when she was not long out of high school. She took a brief hiatus away from PWA towards the end of the last school year, and we’re delighted to have her back.
