Weekly PWA Family Email
Week 4
September 14th, 2018

This week, we can be thankful to have avoided the major storms that are currently battering the Carolinas. Our thoughts are with those affected by Hurricane Florence. I know many of you (including some of our teachers) are hosting family members and friends who’ve had to evacuate. We’re proud to have families like yours as a part of our PWA family.

Next week, we plan to reschedule back-to-school night (see below) and have our first PTC meeting! We hope you’ll join us for both.

The weather is changing a bit, and it’s a good idea to include a sweater in your child’s bag, in case they get cold during the school day.

Have a terrific weekend, and please stay safe and dry!
We hope to reschedule back-to-school night for next week, but we’ll wait until we know for certain that whatever bad weather is headed our way has passed. We’ll let you know as soon as possible! Our teachers have planned presentations, and are excited to talk to you about their classrooms this year.

We’ll send out a notice via email, and by text message once we have the date set.

School Picture Day is scheduled for Monday, October 29th! Students and staff members will have their pictures taken that day.

Makeups, retakes, class photos, sibling photos, and our school photo will be Tuesday, November 13th.

Note: Students who attend only on T/TH in the preschool may have their photo taken that day, or make arrangements to come in on the 29th of October. There will be no makeups possible after November 13th!

More information will come home soon in your child’s backpack.

Have you signed up for our text message alert system? If not, please do! We use our text message alerts to send important information, such as weather-related changes to the school day, or reminders of special events. This is by far the most effective way to reach parents quickly, so we strongly urge you sign up.

To opt in, text PWA to 33222.

Join the PTC!

The first PTC meeting will take place this Thursday, September 20th at 5:30 pm in the school cafeteria. Please join us! Being a part of the PTC is a great way to participate more fully in your child’s education and school experience. We hope to see you there!

Would you like to sign your child up for tutoring after school? PWA’s teachers are here to help! We offer tutoring in one-on-one or small group sessions (no larger than 4 students). Subjects include language arts, reading comprehension, spelling, math (all levels, including pre-algebra, algebra I, and geometry) foreign languages and more. The cost is $25 per subject for a 30-minute session, and multiple subjects are available each afternoon. Please contact the office for more details! Available for students 5 and up.

Weekly Class Updates

Our kindergartners are learning all about being community helpers. They’ll go on a mini-field trip to the fire station next door on Monday, September 17th at 1:30 pm!
In language arts, they reviewed blending and sentence formation, and made silly rhymes.

Our first graders did some work outside to enjoy the weather before it turns!

Our second graders all got 108% on their spelling tests this week, which includes all the bonus words!

Our third graders talked about natural disasters, and made expository pamphlets about how to respond to them.

Our fourth graders also got 100% on their spelling tests this week!

Our 5-8th graders talked about literary analysis at different levels, and why it’s important. They should be reading their books for their upcoming book reports!

Our 2s students continued to learn All About Me, and about body parts.

3s students learned about the five senses. They played listening games, and searched for hard and soft objects in a box. Our twos took several walks outside this week to look around, and our 3s watched an animated book on the five senses on Friday. They also made a Mr. Potato Head and a rectangle robot for crafts.

Happy Birthday to Malachi, who turned 3 on September 14th.

Our Jr K will learn about being community helpers next week, and got some new uniforms in advance of it. See pictures below!

Our infants and toddlers had a fun week full of art and activities! Their dot paintings went home today.

Several of our “babies” became true “toddlers” this week and took their first steps! So exciting.
