Week 2

Our second week of school was busy and eventful, and lots of fun. Our students got outside to have lunch under our new canopies when it wasn’t too hot, and explored during recess and STEM time.

Like about 46,000 other residents in the area, we lost power on Tuesday afternoon. This set off our fire alarm and occasioned a visit from our neighboring fire department. We evacuated the building, and had to utilize our text message alert system for the first time this year. (If you haven’t signed up for it yet, please be sure to! You’ll find information below on how to opt in). It was all very exciting, and our teachers and staff did an excellent job keeping everyone calm and organized. Although there was no danger, we are grateful to our local firefighters for their quick response and assistance!

Next week will feature a virtual back-to-school night on Thursday, Sept. 2nd for our elementary and middle school families (with a preschool event the following week). More details are forthcoming for both events, but be on the lookout for emails from your child’s teacher.

Next week we’ll welcome our new music teacher, Mr. Ebenezer Allotey. Mr. Allotey (or Mr. Ebenezer, as he wishes to be called) was the director of a world-renowned choir in Ghana, and has been teaching children’s music programs here in the US for several years. We are delighted to welcome him to PWA! We’ll also welcome back Nuria Alonso, our fantastic, longtime Spanish teacher. We’re so excited to have her in the building again. Ms. Sherry Lopez and Cassidy Benfield will also join our staff as Jr K teachers and we look forward to having them with us.

Big thanks to our teachers who went online last week with circle time for our preschoolers and full classes for our elementary students who had to be at home. We are relieved to report that no further cases of Covid have been confirmed since that first week. We know that this kind of luck may not always hold, but we’re very thankful for this outcome. All of our classes will be back to school on Monday, and we can’t wait!

Have a wonderful weekend, PWA families!
On Thursday, September 2nd, we’ll hold a Virtual Back-to-School night for our elementary and middle school parents (stay tuned for our preschool event the following week!). Parents will join their child’s teacher via Zoom to learn about the teacher’s philosophy and style, classroom rules and structure, homework, curriculum, and more. The office will send out general information about the event next week, but be on the lookout for more specific information from your child’s teacher with Zoom links and times.
