Policies

Admittance: We seek students who meet high personal and academic standards, students who strive to develop a well-rounded personality, and who will benefit from our school. Students are evaluated and may be administered admissions exams. We reserve the right to deny acceptance if these requirements are not met, or if the student possesses an educational, or psychological situation that the Academy is not equipped to handle. Mutual respect is expected between the faculty, staff, students, and parents to achieve the goals of families of the Academy.

Dress Code: Prince William Academy students are required to wear light blue or white polo shirts. Girls and boys may wear dark blue pants or shorts. Girls may also wear dark blue jumpers or skirts. This dress code is required for Jr-kindergarten students and older. The purpose of the uniform is to promote school unity and the Academy image.

Illness: If your child becomes ill during the day you will be notified. Please make arrangements for someone to pick up your child if you are not able. Any child with a temperature over 100 degrees, a child who is vomiting, or a child with diarrhea will not be permitted to remain at school. If your child requires medication during the day, you must bring the medication to the office and fill out a form. Please do not bring medicines directly to the classrooms or send in medicine with your child. We can not dispense medicine without the proper consent forms.

Preschool: Preschool children ages 2-4 should bring a plastic box, shoe sized, with a change of clothes. Please label the box with your child's name. Remember to change clothes when the seasons change. Preschool children who take nap time must bring a fitted crib sheet, a blanket and a pillow case to put them in. Sheets and blankets go home every Friday for laundering. Pillows are not allowed unless they are attached to a nap mat. Please label everything including all school supplies.

Field Trips: We will have scheduled field trips throughout the year. Please pay any field trip money to your teacher and do not include it with your tuition. Field trip money must be made in the form of cash. Volunteers or chaperones are welcome, please check with the teacher to see if there is a charge. We ask that younger siblings not accompany us on field trips. Our focus is ensuring the safety of our students. If your child is under six, they must have a car seat. State law prohibits us from transporting anyone under the age of six without a car seat. Small booster seats are appreciated; they fit better in our vans.

Behavior/Discipline: Please see our Standards of Conduct form regarding behavior and discipline. Parents and students must sign this form and return it to school.

Referrals: Referrals, also known as detention, will be enforced for all Grade. A referral can be given in a one, two, or three hour increment depending on the reason for the referral. Warning slips will go home prior to receiving a referral. A referral may be issued after two warnings. Referrals will be served on Saturdays. You will receive a note with the time and date a referral needs to be served. Please sign the referral and return to school. If a parent has a conflict and can not bring the child, arrangements can be made to choose an alternate date. We will not reschedule; however, for soccer games, birthday parties, etc. There will be an assignment given on the scheduled Saturday. Failure to show up will result in a zero for that assignment.

Personal items: Personal items should not be brought to school. No toys or gameboys. The school can not be held responsible for items that are lost. Show and tell will be the only time that personal items will be allowed.

Sign in/out: Please make sure that you sign your preschoolers in and out everyday. Elementary children who attend before and after care must be signed in and out. Under no circumstances should a child enter a building without an adult escort. All children must be turned over to a staff member.

Homework: Homework is given every night Monday through Friday. Pre-K and Kindergarten will have homework packets sent home on Monday and they need to be brought in on Friday. First grade will have a spelling and math assignment daily. Homework for second and third grade will consist of a spelling, reading and a math assignment. Fourth through seventh grade will consist of spelling, reading, math, and a social studies or science assignment. Foreign Language assignment are given regularly. If a student does not turn in an assignment he/she will do it during recess. If a student does not turn in an assignment a second time he/she will finish the assignment during recess and the parent will be called. Homework sheets are given out every week. Please check the sheets every night and initial when the student has completed the assignment.

Children who are not picked up at their scheduled time will be sent to the office to wait unless prior arrangements have been made. A student who is absent for more than 15 days in one school year is subject to failure. Medical reasons are an exception, but must be accompanied by a doctor's note.

Snow Days: Prince William Academy follows the Prince William County policy regarding snow days. If the county is closed for school or teacher work days, we will be closed for school but open for child care. We do not have delayed openings or early dismissals and the regular schedule applies. It is up to the parent's discretion if they would like to pick their child up early due to weather conditions. Additionally, if the federal and/or county government closes due to weather, our entire facility will be closed for the day.
